Walker, 71, fell Friday on a trail at Steamboat Springs in Colorado and remained in a coma until sometime that night.

The school's facilities include laboratories for electron microscopy and stable isotopes, a museum of paleontology, and a graduate research center.  in 1948. An award in his name is now given every year to college football's top running back.

A friend, John Nichols, said he was skiing with Walker and was told his heart was stopped for a time.

``When I got there they said there was no pulse,'' Nichols said. ``After 15 seconds of chest compressions, they got a pulse.''
