VAN NUYS - A woman in her 30s shot and killed her adopted 2-year-old daughter Friday night and then killed herself, police said.

Police said a female friend of the woman discovered the bodies in the condominium home in the 13600 block of Valerio Street and called police at 5:40 p.m. An initial investigation indicated that the shootings stemmed from a domestic dispute.

Hahn joins chorus against 11 digits

City Attorney James Hahn on Friday urged the state Public Utilities Commission to suspend telephone area code splits or overlays until there is a statewide policy dealing with the number shortage.

The legal brief filed by Hahn is one of several filed by cities across the state to prevent telephone companies from requiring users to dial 11 numbers, even if within their own area code.

Council to discuss noise near airport

Los Angeles Councilman Joel Wachs on Friday called for the City Council to meet outside of City Hall on the issue of noise at Van Nuys Airport Van Nuys Airport (IATA: VNY, ICAO: KVNY, FAA LID: VNY) is a public airport located in Van Nuys, California in the San Fernando Valley, within the Los Angeles city limits. .

Proposal could fund small film projects

In an effort to keep movie and television production in Los Angeles, a city official on Friday proposed creating a revolving fund to provide gap financing on low-cost projects.

Councilman Mike Hernandez suggested a working group of city agencies meet to discuss the proposal, under which the city would provide funding for productions under $5 million.

``The funds would seek to equal the incentives provided by Canada and provide a mechanism to keep production in Los Angeles,'' Hernandez said. Gap financing refers to the difference between between the projected budget and what producers can hustle from sales of distribution rights.

Contractor gets jail term for no license

VAN NUYS - A San Fernando man who worked as an unlicensed contractor and charged homeowners for work he didn't do was sentenced Friday to a year in jail and ordered to pay restitution to homeowners in Reseda and Northridge.

Hector Perez Lopez, 44, pleaded no contest to two misdemeanor counts of working as an unlicensed contractor using the name HLR (Home Location Register) A database in a cellular system that contains all the subscribers within the provider's home service area. When a subscriber reaches a new service area, the data in the HLR is requested and transferred via SS7 to the VLR (Visitor Location  Contractor Services, prosecutors said.
