BRIEFLY : VALLEY VOTE TO END DRIVE BY SEPT. 30.

A group circulating petitions to launch a study of San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
secession plans to finish collecting signatures by Sept. 30.

Valley Voters Organized Toward Empowerment originally planned an Aug. 27 deadline for its petition drive, which seeks to gather signatures from about 180,000 registered voters and force a state commission to study Valley cityhood. However, Gov. Pete Wilson last week signed a bill that gave the group an extra 90 days to circulate the petitions.

Valley VOTE President Jeff Brain said the group will not need all three additional months to reach its goal. The group is approaching 150,000 signatures collected, he said.

In its editorial pages, the Daily News has endorsed Valley VOTE's drive for a study of secession to answer such questions as whether a new city would be economically viable. The newspaper also contributed $60,000 to the petition-gathering effort.
