Roadside worker killed at intersection

WESTLAKE VILLAGE - A North Hills utility worker died Wednesday after an 85-year-old motorist ran a red light and hit a pickup that careened into the man as he was working alongside the road, officials said.

Jesus Reyes, 50, a foreman for Northwest Excavating in Northridge, was in charge of a three-man crew working at the intersection of Thousand Oaks Boulevard and Lindero Canyon Road, said Mike Piccard, the company's general manager.

About 9:05 a.m., Blaine Carney of Agoura Hills was driving a 1985 Subaru station wagon north on Lindero Canyon Road about 25 mph when he ran the light, said Sgt. Girl, 3, improving after 2nd-story fall

PANORAMA CITY - A 3-year-old girl who fell from her home's second-story window was markedly improving and in good condition Wednesday at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles, a facility spokesman said.

The child, who was not identified, had been in critical condition with a fractured skull after the 5:40 p.m. incident Tuesday in the 14800 block of Parthenia Street.

Wild animal center to hold fund-raiser

TOPANGA - The Nature of Wildworks wildlife center will hold a benefit show Saturday to support the upkeep of wild and exotic animals that formerly worked at the Los Angeles Zoo The Los Angeles Zoo founded in 1966, is a large zoo located in Los Angeles, California, USA.

The Zoo, located in Los Angeles' Griffith Park, is home to 1,200 animals from around the world.

The animals will be performing, along with actors and musical groups, from noon to 5 p.m. at the Will Geer Theatricum Botanicum, 1419 N. Topanga Blvd. in Topanga. Admission is $10 for adults and $7 for children under 12. For reservations, call (310) 455-0550.

The nonprofit Wildworks center provides lifetime care for animals including mountain lions, foxes, squirrels, a serval serval, medium-sized African cat, Felis serval, found S of the Sahara in scrub country close to water. Company expands bean recall in state

ALBANY, N.Y. - A company has expanded its recall of a brand of jarred beans distributed in California because the product could be tainted with botulism-causing bacteria.

Salvati Foods, a Hicksville, Long Island, food distributor, is now recalling all of its 8- and 20-ounce jars of Asti Ready-to-Eat Jumbo Italian Lupini Beans. State Agricultural Department spokesman Pete Gregg said recent tests revealed a batch of the beans contained low acidity levels, which could lead to the bacteria that causes botulism botulism (bŏch`əlĭz'əm), acute poisoning resulting from ingestion of food containing toxins produced by the bacillus Clostridium botulinum. .

School in Burbank marks 50th year

Pupils, staff and alumni of Robert Louis Stevenson Elementary School in Burbank celebrated the campus' 50th anniversary Wednesday night.

Past pupils of the school said Stevenson is a special elementary school with a small-town feel. That's because many of Stevenson's alumni stayed in the area and now send their children to the campus.

Among Stevenson's most famous alumni is actor-director Ron Howard, who Principal Tim Bower said couldn't be at the ceremony Wednesday because he was working on location at Olive View-UCLA Medical Center Olive View-UCLA Medical Center is a hospital located in the Sylmar neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, USA.
