One day after surprising top-ranked Pete Sampras Peter “Pete” Sampras (born 12 August 1971), is a former World No. 1 tennis player from the United States. During his 15-year career he won a record 14 Grand Slam men's singles titles in 52 appearances. Sampras finished as No. , Michael Chang Michael Te-Pei Chang (張德培; Pinyin: Zhāng Dépéi; born February 22 1972, in Hoboken, New Jersey, U.S.) is an American former professional tennis player.  was beaten Friday by unseeded Albert Costa Albert Costa Casals (born June 25 1975, in Lleida) is a professional tennis player from Spain. He is best remembered for winning the men's singles title at the French Open in 2002.

Costa began playing tennis at the age of five.

In defeating Sampras, the 14th-ranked Chang had outserved one of the game's big hitters. Against Costa, ranked No. 20, Chang struggled to hold service and repeatedly came up short on rallies from the baseline.

After losing badly to the world's top-ranked player in their four previous matches, including three Grand Slam events, Anna Kournikova beat Martina Hingis 6-3, 7-6 (7-1) in the quarterfinals at the German Open in Berlin.
