Mike Tyson won't be able to get out of jail until at least early June.

A judge in Rockville, Md., on Friday praised the ``remarkable'' progress made by the former heavyweight champion but rejected his request for a reduced sentence.

``Mr. Tyson deserves no special treatment,'' Montgomery County District Court Judge Stephen Johnson said in denying the motion that would have cut the boxer's one-year term to eight months.

Evander Holyfield filed for divorce from his wife, Janice, effectively ending a 2-1/2-year marriage he has admitted was a mistake from the start. The filing of the divorce complaint comes six months after Holyfield publicly admitted fathering two children out of wedlock during the marriage.

BASKETBALL: Badly in need of outside shooting help, the Minnesota Timberwolves signed guard James Robinson to a 10-day contract. Robinson, cut by the Clippers last week, played for Minnesota during the 1996-97 season.

UCLA's Maylana Martin was selected to the women's Kodak All-American team. Martin is one of four Bruins to have ever received the honor, joining Natalie Williams (1994), three-time honoree Denise Curry (1979-81) and four-time selection Ann Meyers (1975-78).

As expected, former Michigan coach Steve Fisher was named head coach at San Diego State.

Former St. John's coach Fran Fraschilla is the leading candidate to become New Mexico's next head coach, a UNM official said.

MOTOR SPORTS:Kenny Irwin set a track record in capturing the top qualifying spot for Sunday's Primestar 500 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth. He cruised around the 1-1/2-mile oval on his qualifying lap at 190.154 mph.

TRACK AND FIELD: World champions Marion Jones and Michael Johnson were impressive winners at the Engen Grand Prix Summer Series in Cape Town, South Africa. A strong headwind slowed the times, but both sprinters were impressive. Jones started brilliantly in the 100 meters and never was threatened, clocking 11.06 seconds.Johnson also got out well, then eased up to win the 200 at 20.41.
