The Surveyor is still expected to be pulled into Martian orbit Sept. 17, after a 435-million-mile flight, said Cunningham, who is managing the project.

``We are not overly concerned about this because, if necessary, we can use motor-driven gimbals to place the panel at the desired angle,'' he said.

warned Friday that scam artists are at work again, telephoning people and saying they are collecting donations for firefighters.

``We've been getting several (reports of) calls . . . for the past couple of days,'' said Capt. Steve Valenzuela, spokesman for the Fire Department.

Most of the calls have been for ``donations'' of $75, usually in cash, but some have been as low as $30, Valenzuela said.

``There are many charitable causes in Los Angeles County that are worthy of your support. However, the (county Fire Department) is not soliciting money for any purpose over the telephone,'' he said.

The scam artists have been asking for money to benefit firefighters injured in the Malibu blaze, or for a county Fire Department magazine or yearbook.

Another suit filed over truck tragedy
