BRIEFLY : TEACHER IMPROVING FROM GUNSHOT WOUND.


The teacher who was shot in the head by a stray bullet six months ago thanked supporters Tuesday and is making an impressive recovery.

Alfredo Perez, 30, held a news conference outside Martin Luther King/Drew Medical Center for the purpose of ``thanking you, all of you, and thanking you for, I guess, for your support and prayers.''

Educators said they are delighted with Perez's recovery. The fifth-grade teacher is talking and walking with the aid of a tripod.

``He's absolutely determined to make a full recovery. He's a very stubborn guy,'' said Helen Bernstein, a friend of Perez and his wife, Virginia, and ex-president of the teachers union, United Teachers-Los Angeles.

Perez was hit by a bullet which strayed through a window in the library at Figueroa Street Figueroa Street is a street in Los Angeles County, California. It runs in a north/south direction for a length of more than 30 miles (48 km) between the Los Angeles communities of Eagle Rock and Wilmington.  Elementary School elementary school: see school. .

He returned to the hospital last week for a cranioplasty to repair a defect left by the bullet. He splits his time between home and a rehabilitation facility.

County orders study on limiting services

Supervisors asked for a report back in one month on what will be possible or required under the welfare reform laws and Wilson's order.

Flood-control project receives approval

A massive flood-control project along the southern end of the Los Angeles River The Los Angeles River is an intermittent river flowing through Los Angeles County, California, from Canoga Park in the west end of the San Fernando Valley, 51 miles (82 km) southeast to its mouth in Long Beach.  and its tributaries was reaffirmed Tuesday by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors, which decided against strongly pursuing alternatives raised by environmentalists.

The nearly four-hour hearing by the board was forced after a state judge this spring ordered more consideration of alternatives suggested by the Friends of the Los Angeles River.

The Friends group has been calling for use of more natural approaches to controlling flooding along the river, with green belts, settling ponds and catch basins, instead of the 22 miles of raised levee levee (lĕv`ē) [Fr.,=raised], embankment built along a river to prevent flooding by high water. City trash collection delayed by holiday

Los Angeles city refuse collection will be one day late this week because of the Labor Day Labor Day, holiday celebrated in the United States and Canada on the first Monday in September to honor the laborer. It was inaugurated by the Knights of Labor in 1882 and made a national holiday by the U.S. Congress in 1894.  holiday, officials said.

The regular collection schedule will resume next week.
