BRIEFLY : TAMALE COOK-OFF TO FUND SCHOLARSHIPS.


PALMDALE - Los Angeles County Raceway will host Tamale Tamale (təmä`lē), town (1984 pop. 136,828), capital of the Northern Region, N Ghana. It is a road junction and agricultural trade and education center. Fest '99 on Sunday to raise money for a Latino scholarship fund.

The festival will feature rides, games and a tamale cook-off with cash prizes. First place will receive $200 cash, second place will receive $100, and third place will receive $50.

Entertainment will include recording artists Los Capos de Mexico, Banda Vallarta Show, Grupo Alma Latina and Grupo Amanecer.

Gates open at 2 p.m. at the raceway, 6850 E. Ave. T. Admission is $8. Children under age 12 are admitted free.

Sponsors are the Greater Antelope Valley Chamber of Commerce, radio station KUTY 1470 AM and the Los Angeles County Raceway.

Citizenship classes beginning Saturday

LANCASTER - Free citizenship and English as a second language classes begin at noon Saturday at Grace Resource Center, 44932 Yucca St.

Counselors will be available to help with the application process.

Recruitment taking place on Saturday

LANCASTER - The Lancaster sheriff's station, 501 W. Lancaster Blvd., will be hosting a recruitment day at 10 a.m. Saturday for men and women interested in the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department reserve deputy program.

The session will last about two hours and will cover topics including information about the program and preliminary paperwork for those interested in starting the application process.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens, be between the ages of 20 and 54, possess a high school diploma or equivalent, hold a valid driver's license, and be employed full time or be a full-time student
Full-Time Student
A status that is important for determining dependency exemptions. An individual enrolled in a post-secondary institution may be eligible for certain tax breaks.

Notes:
The full-time status is based on what the individual's school considers full time.

All applicants will be subject to a thorough background investigation, physical testing and psychological screening.

The reserve deputies volunteering in the Antelope Valley serve in several capacities, including uniform patrol, search and rescue, and posse for those who have their own horses.

No reservations are required, but all applicants must report to the station lobby before 10 a.m.
