BRIEFLY : SUSPECT IN FURNITURE SHOP ROBBERY FLEES.


PALMDALE - A man wielding a large kitchen knife robbed a Palmdale furniture store Friday evening and escaped with approximately $700, sheriff's officials said.

A man believed to be approximately 18 years old entered Sumumvleria Furniture in the 400 block of East Palmdale Boulevard shortly after 5 p.m. and demanded money.

Although officials searched the area, the suspect could not be found.

Firefighters contain blaze in trash bin

LANCASTER - Fire officials spent more than an hour battling flames that broke out in a trash compactor near a Mervyn's department store Saturday, officials said.

Firefighters were sent to 15th Street West at Avenue J-8 shortly after 1:30 p.m., where they found a 40-foot trash compactor fully engulfed in flames In Flames is a melodic death metal band from Gothenburg, Sweden founded in 1990. Along with Dark Tranquillity and At the Gates, they pioneered what is now known as melodic death metal. .

Although the machinery was adjacent to a Mervyn's store, officials were able to keep the fire from spreading.

The cause of the fire was not released.
