Kids under 9 cleared to show pigs at fair

Delighting a local livestock organization, organizers of the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

Valley, southern California, U.S. Northwest of central Los Angeles, the valley is bounded by the San Gabriel, Santa Susana, and Santa Monica mountains and the Simi Hills.
Fair agreed Friday to hold off on proposed age restrictions for children wanting to show their pigs at the fair in June.

Fair organizers were seeking to prevent children under 9 from exhibiting their porkers because the officials feared some are too small to handle the thick-bodied animals.

But parents of the children in the Grange club struck a compromise with the fair organizers, pledging to remain in the pen with their children when the youngsters display their swine for auction and showmanship contests.

Fair officials said they are scheduled to discuss the policy for future years in April.

Bernson wants city to lease reservoir

Councilman Hal Bernson has called for the city to lease the Chatsworth Nature/Preserve Reservoir to the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy The Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy is an agency of the state of California in the United States founded in 1979 and dedicated to the acquisition of land in the Santa Susana and Santa Monica Mountains and the Simi Hills, north and west of Los Angeles, for preservation as open  to protect it from any potential development.

Bernson, in a proposal to be considered by the City Council next week, said Friday that the lease would be for 10 years and would allow the conservancy to protect and restore the area while saving the Department of Water and Power up to $50,000 a year.

At one time the land was used as a reservoir, but it can no longer be used because of damage suffered in the 1971 Sylmar Earthquake.
