 detectives are investigating an attack on an African-American man whose assailant hit him from behind and uttered a racial slur, police said Friday.

The man, who police did not identify, was hospitalized with cuts to his left ear and back of his neck, said Detective Steve Osti of the Foothill Division.

He was walking in the 9100 block of Telfair Avenue at 6 p.m. Thursday when he was struck from behind with a sharp object, Osti said. ``(The attacker) told him, `You know we don't want no blacks around here,' '' then fled, Osti said.

Cosmetics worker succumbs to burns

A 35-year-old man who suffered burns over most of his body in a flash fire at a Canoga Park cosmetics company died Friday at the Grossman Burn Center at Sherman Oaks Hospital Sherman Oaks Hopital (SOH) is an 153 bed acute care facility in Sherman Oaks, California, USA and is home of world renowned the Grossman Burn Center. SOH is owned and operated by Prime Healthcare Services, Inc.  and Health Center.

Council OKs refund of brush-cutting fee

After months of controversy and debate, the Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  approved a measure on Friday to return a $13 brush clearance inspection fee to residents who have paid it.

The council voted 12-0 to approve the measure that ends the fee program. It goes to Mayor Richard Riordan for approval.

Economic protest leads to 14 arrests

Demonstrators against the Group of Eight conference blocked a downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area. The sprawling, multi-centered megacity is such that its downtown core is often considered just another district like Hollywood or  intersection near Pershing Square on Friday before police made arrests.

Fourteen of the 30 protesters were arrested, said Sgt. Gary McNamara, watch commander of Central Division. The arrests involved failure to disperse.

Around 2 p.m. at Olive and Fifth streets, demonstrators parked cars to block traffic.
