BRIEFLY : STATION'S REVAMP ADDED TO BOND PLAN.

The City Council on Wednesday added $2 million worth of renovations to a wish list for the LAPD's Rampart Station, as part of a proposed bond measure for upgrading police facilities.

The addition brings the total to be raised via the proposed bond measure to $205.7 million.

The request for upgrades came from Councilwoman Jackie Goldberg, who has been trying to get the station's 28 women a real locker room. The officers have been changing clothes behind a sheet hung in a converted storage room.

Goldberg displayed large black-and-white photographs of the bleak changing room, and compared the conditions to those at a nearly $30 million driver training center and firing range facility in Westchester.

Congresswoman must answer panel

SANTA ANA - Rep. Loretta Sanchez, D-Garden Grove, can ignore a subpoena issued by the Republican she defeated last fall, but must answer Congress' questions, a GOP-led House panel ruled in Washington on Wednesday.

The House Oversight Committee will determine the validity of Robert Dornan's claims that he lost his 46th Congressional District seat because of voter fraud. The panel's decision came a day after a federal judge upheld Dornan's right to issue subpoenas.

Late Wednesday afternoon, Sanchez said she will comply with ``any reasonable, legal, constitutionally valid request'' from Congress for information.

``However, I will closely scrutinize this unprecedented abuse of congressional power,'' she said.

On Tuesday, U.S. District Judge Gary Taylor upheld Dornan's right, under the Federal Election Contest Act, to subpoena records to try to prove his allegations. But he also certified his ruling, allowing the lawyers to take an immediate appeal to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

South El Monte fire contained by crews

SOUTH EL MONTE - A brush fire briefly threatened structures in South El Monte before it was contained Wednesday, a county Fire Department spokeswoman said.

The blaze started about 2:40 p.m. at 904 Durfee Ave., said dispatcher Clyde Taylor. Four helicopters and 70 firefighters took nearly two hours to extinguish the blaze, which eventually charred about 15 acres, dispatcher Emil Soldovan said.

Elsewhere in Southern California, a dozen firefighters reported minor injuries, from scrapes to bee stings, as they cleaned up the latest round of brush fires. The most serious injury was a broken arm and possible broken ribs suffered by a firefighter working near the San Bernardino County community of City Creek.
