Firefighters were called to 7937 Vicky Ave. at about 12:30 p.m. Sunday and were able to extinguish the flames in about 18 minutes, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles city Fire Department.

He said flames were largely confined to the attached garage where the fire apparently started and to one of the bedrooms. The damage appeared to be well in excess of $35,000.

The firefighters rescued cats and rabbits from the smoke-filled home, and there were no injuries, Humphrey said.

Student fatally hurt in Avalon hotel fall

AVALON - An 18-year-old high school student celebrating prom night fell from the rooftop of a Catalina Island hotel early Sunday and died several hours later with massive head injuries, authorities said.

David Ramirez Jr. and a fellow Avalon High School student were walking down the sloped roof to return to the inside of the Glenmore Hotel about 2:30 a.m. when Ramirez slipped and fell four stories, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Deputy Bruce Thomas.

The students had gone to the roof to smoke, apparently accessing the roof by hoisting themselves up from a balcony, he said.
