City begins probe of garage homes

Los Angeles city officials took the first step Tuesday to create a task force of agencies to look into the problem of illegally converted garages as a result of the deaths of three people last month in Sun Valley.

On a request from Councilman Richard Alarcon, the council ordered the city Building and Safety, Housing, Water and Power, Police and Fire departments and the City Attorney's Office to look into what can be done about the structures and how the city can shut them down.

Maria Magdalena Gonzalez and two of her grandchildren, Joanne Paz, 7, and Janesa Paz, 3, died March 19 when the converted garage in which they were living caught fire.

Council OKs funds for LAPD shotguns

The City Council approved $60,000 Tuesday to outfit the motorcycles of LAPD traffic officers with shotguns, despite concerns that the city may be overarming its officers.

The proposal predates the recent North Hollywood shooting in which two bank robbers carrying automatic weapons had LAPD officers outgunned, but some council members referred to the incident during Tuesday's debate.

``This will send the message to (the public) that motor officers are fully equipped to handle some serious criminal activities out there,'' said Councilman Richard Alarcon. ``I think this is a reasonable approach.''

The LAPD had previously approved the deployment of high-powered rifles and more powerful handguns in response to the North Hollywood shooting, but without Tuesday's action, motorcycle officers would be left with handguns to respond to crime, LAPD officials told the council.

The council voted 11-2 to approve the project with council members Nate Holden and Rita Walters dissenting.
