BRIEFLY : SEVERAL CATS KILLED IN APARTMENT FIRE.


TARZANA - Thirty firefighters extinguished a fire caused by careless smoking that killed some cats in a Tarzana apartment Christmas morning, officials said.

Firefighters were called at 4:42 a.m. and quelled the flames in 16 minutes.

The fire didn't spread beyond the one apartment in the two-story building, said Jim Wells Jim Wells MLA (born 27 April 1957) is a politician from the Democratic Unionist Party and a deputy speaker of the Transitional Assembly (Northern Ireland).

Wells is one of six Assembly members for South Down.
, Fire Department spokesman. The apartment sustained $75,000 in property and structural damage, Wells said.

No people were injured, but several cats died, he said.

CHP officers arrested 62 motorists in Los Angeles County on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs between 6 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Christmas Day, up from 49 last year.

Statewide, CHP officers made 230 DUI arrests over the same period, up from 217 last year.

Library will waive late book charges

GLENDALE - The Glendale Public Library The Glendale Public Library is located in Glendale, California, and serves a diverse community of over 200,000 people. GPL has a total of 6 branches (a 7th branch is slated to open in 2007) in addition to the large Central Library, including the unique Brand Library and Art Center.  will waive fines for patrons who return their overdue books between Dec. 31 and Jan. 3, said spokeswoman Cindy Cleary.

The program is part of the library system's ``millennium fine-free week,'' she said.

Overdue library materials returned to any Glendale Public Library book drop during that time also will be fine-free.

Materials from the Brand Library may not be returned through a book drop at any time, and overdue fees for rental and lost materials will not be waived, Cleary said.

Vehicle collision injures 3 critically

Six people were injured Saturday - three of them critically - when two vehicles collided on a street near downtown Los Angeles Downtown Los Angeles is the central business district of Los Angeles, California, located close to the geographic center of the metropolitan area.
