president Juan Antonio Samaranch Don Juan Antoni Samaranch i Torelló, Marquis of Samaranch (es: Don Juan Antonio Samaranch i Torelló, marqués de Samaranch) (born July 17, 1920 in Barcelona) is a Spanish sports official and was president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) from 1980 to 2001.  on Monday dismissed the notion of early retirement and insisted he will complete the remaining two years of his term.

Samaranch played down any rift with IOC vice president Dick Pound, who last month suggested Samaranch might leave after ushering in reforms at the end of this year.

The 78-year-old Spaniard cited the overwhelming vote of confidence - 86-2 - he won in a secret ballot in March during a special session dealing with the Salt Lake City bribery scandal.

``My position depends on the IOC members,'' Samaranch said in an interview with the Associated Press. ``The secret ballot we had in Lausanne was very clear. The IOC members think I am the right man at this moment to lead the changes we need in the IOC. With the confidence of the IOC members, I am ready to finish my mandate.''

Embattled Australian IOC member Phil Coles will appear before a special inquiry panel Thursday in Lausanne, Switzerland, to provide ``personal explanations'' for conduct that could lead to his expulsion.

Coles already has received a severe warning from the IOC for accepting lavish travel and other benefits from Salt Lake bidders. He is now under investigation for further allegations of abusing his Olympic positions.
