Drug lab discovery leads to arrest of 5

CHATSWORTH - Five people were arrested after police discovered a methamphetamine lab, which briefly caught fire Tuesday, authorities said.

Police Commissioner Art Mattox, who is openly gay, said preliminary police statistics seem to indicate the police are not unfairly enforcing vice laws against gay bars, but he asked for a detailed report comparing action at gay bars with action at straight bars.

LAPD Cmdr. Dan Watson said he could identify only a handful of arrests at gay bars in the Central Bureau, compared with 400 arrests at all bars and on-site liquor establishments.

Troupe to perform play, raise money

NORTH HILLS - A theater troupe from New Directions for Youth will perform a holiday play titled ``A Real Christmas Story'' at 7 p.m. today and Thursday at First United Methodist Church First United Methodist Church is a common name for the first United Methodist church established in a particular locality. Many First United Methodist Churches exist around the world.  of Sepulveda in North Hills.

Money raised from the show will go toward further educating the youths who are members of Funds for our Future Theater Group. The show will be performed at 15435 Rayen St. inside Friendship Hall. Admission is $5 for adults. Children are free.

Business surcharge tax to go on ballot

In the first use of a state measure requiring voter approval of new taxes, the Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  decided Tuesday to ask voters in April to approve a business surcharge tax.

The 1.5 percent tax, which would bring in $10 million to $12 million a year, was extended by the council this year to balance the city's $4 billion budget.

Because of approval of Proposition 218 in the November election, the city needs voter approval to continue to assess the tax. City officials said it is the only tax in place affected by the measure.

The Los Angeles City Council delayed from Tuesday until Jan. 7 a decision on whether to allow septic waste tank dumping at the Tillman Reclamation Plant in the Sepulveda Basin.

The delay was requested by Councilwoman Laura Chick, who said residents who are opposed to the dumping did not have sufficient time to discuss the matter.
