BRIEFLY : ROBBERS GRAB CASH REGISTER FROM SHOP.


VENTURA - Two armed men held up a an employee at a Fosters doughnut shop early Wednesday morning and took the cash register with a small amount of money inside.

Ventura police said one suspect rushed in through the front door with a handgun, leaped over the corner and forced the clerk to the back of the store at gunpoint.

The second suspect entered the shop through a back door before stealing the cash register from the front counter.

Police said both men fled to a vehicle in an alley behind the shop.

The employee was unharmed, and nothing was lost but the entire cash register and the small amount of money in it, police said.

Candidates sought for local grand jury

VENTURA - The deadline to apply for a seat on the 1998-99 Ventura County grand jury has been extended to May 1, officials announced.

The application deadline was extended in hope of broadening the demographic diversity of the grand jury, officials said. Applications received so far have not met the goal of including a demographic cross section of Ventura County.

THOUSAND OAKS - The City Council approved a $1.3 million contract to rehabilitate re·ha·bil·i·tate

 Construction. The new child-care center could be open as soon as January for more than 100 kids. More than half of the available space will be reserved for children from low-income families.

City officials said they finally can afford to act on plans informally discussed for years to convert the former adult center into a place where children will receive care. Work is expected to begin before summer.
