Moving to close a loophole in the investigation of restaurants, the Los Angeles City Council The Los Angeles City Council is the governing body of the City of Los Angeles, California, United States.  approved a measure Tuesday requiring the establishments to post their sanitation grades.

Under a twist in county law, the city was required to pass a specific ordinance requiring the posting of the A, B, C or number grade given by the county Health Department.

City officials did urge the county to amend its proposal to allow a second inspection for technical failings before the grades are posted.

Quake repair fraud charges filed by city

Continuing a crackdown on fraud in the city's $350 million earthquake loan repair program, Los Angeles City Attorney The Los Angeles City Attorney is an elected official whose job is to prosecute all of the misdemeanor criminal offenses within the city of Los Angeles, California, United States.  James Hahn filed charges Tuesday against two local contractors and a property owner from Manhattan Beach.

Grand theft and conspiracy charges were filed against Moshe Levy of Agoura Hills and David Farrell of Manhattan Beach for allegedly accepting $35,321 from the city for work - including construction of a concrete walkway and an awning - they never performed on a five-unit apartment building on Vincennes Street in Northridge.

Hahn's office also charged Arthur Aslanian of Sherman Oaks with failing to pay prevailing wages totaling $112,687 to five employees repairing a homeless shelter.

Sun Valley death deemed homicide

SUN VALLEY - A man whose body was found in a burning car here nearly two weeks ago also had been stabbed and shot repeatedly, the Coroner's Office said Tuesday.

The victim has been identified as Ruben Alvarado Cruz, 34, of Sun Valley, said Los Angeles County Deputy Coroner Scott Carrier. The death has been ruled a homicide.

The body of Cruz, an auto mechanic, was found Feb. 6 in a 1989 Acura Integra that was ablaze in the intersection of Roscoe Boulevard and Clybourne Avenue, near the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Originally built as U.S. Highway 99, it was re-signed as Interstate 5 in 1964. .

Dozens of inmates injured in jail fight

SAUGUS - Violence broke out Tuesday between African-American and Latino inmates in a maximum-security jail at the Peter J. Pitchess Detention Center complex, leaving dozens of inmates injured before deputies could restore calm.

Estimates on the number of inmates who were hurt ranged from 18 to 30, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's and Fire departments.

Council approves shopping center

The Los Angeles City Council voted Tuesday to permit construction of a large shopping center on Ventura Boulevard at Blue Canyon Drive in Studio City.

The council action paves the way for a 95,000-square-foot retail shopping center at 11570 Ventura Blvd.
