Officials identify teen killed crossing street

SYLMAR - A 14-year-old boy struck and killed by a car as he walked across Hubbard Street was identified Friday as Gerardo Vargas.

Vargas had been talking to friends near the side of the road in the 14200 Hubbard Street around 5:30 p.m. Thursday, and had turned to walk away when he stepped in front of a car, said Officer J. Shelby, of the Los Angeles Police Department's Valley Traffic Division.

The driver of the car that hit Vargas was not cited, Shelby said.

 to host meeting for black men in area

Los Angeles City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas will be the opening speaker today when Cal State Northridge, inspired by last year's Million Man March on the nation's capital, hosts its first conference on African-American men.

The conference from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. will include workshops on family, health, spirituality, academics, discrimination and economic advancement.

The event will be held in the University Student Union at 18111 Nordhoff St., Northridge.

3,000 expected to go to sobriety festival

PACOIMA - The sixth annual Clean and Sober Festival will kick off today at David M. Gonzales Private First Class David M. Gonzales (June 9, 1923–April 25, 1945) was a United States Army soldier who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor — the United States' highest military decoration — for his heroic actions during World War II.  Park with game and food booths, contests, entertainment and information and education about alcohol, tobacco and drug use.

More than 3,000 people are expected to attend the festival from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at 10943 Herrick Ave.

The event is sponsored by the Northeast Valley Health Corporation and nearly 40 other community-based agencies and service providers. Participants can receive information on local resources available.
