BRIEFLY : REPORT: KATZENMOYER ACADEMICALLY ELIGIBLE.

Byline: Daily News Wire Services

Ohio State All-America linebacker Andy Katzenmoyer will be eligible to play for the Buckeyes this season after passing three summer school classes, ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network  reported Wednesday.

Katzenmoyer, a Heisman Trophy candidate, needed to pass summer courses in music, golf and AIDS awareness to push his grade-point average past the 2.0 level to be eligible.

The 20-year-old Katzenmoyer won the Butkus Award as college football's top linebacker after making 97 tackles, with 13 for losses, two sacks and two interceptions in 13 games as a sophomore last year.

The network, which didn't cite the source of its information, also said that left guard Rob Murphy also will be eligible. It said that the status of strong safety Damon Moore, who also is under academic scrutiny, was in doubt.

Ohio State athletic director Andy Geiger said the reports are premature. ``All this is rumor. No one at Ohio State has announced anything,'' Geiger said.

The Buckeyes open their season at West Virginia on Saturday.
