Items needed are:

Baby food, diapers, feminine hygiene products, nonperishable food items, clothing (new in original package), water (one-gallon containers) and powdered milk.

Monetary donations can be made by sending checks, earmarked ``Hurricane Pauline,'' to the Salvation Army, 900 W. Ninth St., Los Angeles CA 90015.

Credit card donations can be made by calling the Salvation Army's bilingual emergency disaster services number at (800) 725-9005.

With winds gusting to 50 mph in parts of the Valley on Monday, firefighters braced for the worst, but only four minor brush fires were reported and all were put out.

One fire was within Los Angeles city limits and the others were in county areas.

``If a brush fire breaks out, the chances of it spreading is great on a day like today when there are winds,'' said Wells. ``There's no moisture in the wind, which dries out the moisture in the brush, especially when there's an increase in the temperature.''

A senior citizen and her dog escaped injury in an apparent natural gas explosion Monday that heavily damaged a single-story Glendale home.
