Tree-trimmer jailed for 2nd hawk killing

The owner of a Van Nuys tree-trimming company was sentenced Tuesday to 45 days in jail and an employee received 30 days in jail for killing a protected red-tailed hawk and destroying its nest, prosecutors said.

Deposit for driving into Mexico begins

Beginning today, U.S. drivers headed for the interior of Mexico will be required to leave deposits of up to $800 at the border for their vehicles.

Travel to Baja California or border cities will be exempt from the new deposit system, which is meant to dissuade illegal sales of used U.S. vehicles in Mexico, according to the Mexican Consulate in Los Angeles.

The new system requires a $400 deposit for 1993 and older model cars, $600 for models from 1994-1998, and $800 for 1999 and 2000 models.

Drivers must also pay $15 for a travel permit. The car deposit will be refunded when crossing back into the United States.

Police find suspect after jump from cliff

SUNLAND - Los Angeles police arrested a 30-year-old domestic violence suspect Tuesday who had led officers on a high-speed chase in the mountains before crashing and jumping off a 400-foot cliff, authorities said.

A search and rescue team located Vasquez about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday off Big Tujunga Road, police said. He was arrested and hospitalized for a broken pelvis.

Officers spotted Vasquez Monday in a car with his girlfriend in the passenger seat, police said. She received minor injuries when he crashed.
