Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Jacqueline Connor also put Cheryl Burnham, 39, on five years' probation.

Burnham, who worked for the county's Department of Public Social Services, pleaded no contest earlier to a grand theft charge.

The Antelope Valley woman was supposed to be working as a clerk at MacLaren Hall, a juvenile facility in El Monte, when she made about 2,500 calls on county phone lines between June 1997 and last November to a psychic hotline in the Dominican Republic, Deputy District Attorney Rob Dver said.

Firefighters stop Hansen Dam blaze

Fire officials called in water-dropping helicopters, but ground crews put out a grass fire near Hansen Dam in 21 minutes Thursday, a Los Angeles Fire Department The Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD), also known as the Los Angeles City Fire Department to distinguish it from the Los Angeles County Fire Department. It is the agency that provides fire protection and emergency medical services for the city of Los Angeles.  spokesman said.

The blaze, reported at 4:17 a.m., charred less than two acres of grass north of the 11000 block of Wentworth Street, said spokesman Bob Collis. About 20 firefighters quickly surrounded the fire and extinguished it.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

A bandit taxi driver who fled from police at speeds topping 100 mph with a customer from Pacoima locked in the back seat was sentenced Thursday to 785 days in jail.

Ivan Moscoso, 29, of Boyle Heights was also placed on three years' probation, the conditions of which include a ban on operating a taxi in Los Angeles.

Moscoso was also found to be in violation of probation from two prior convictions, including one for reckless driving.

On May 18, when a Pacoima woman hired Moscoso to take her to Union Station from the Twin Towers jail, two bandit cab investigators approached the cab.

Moscoso then rolled up the windows and power-locked the doors as the woman tried frantically to get out of the cab, prosecutors said.

Valli's wife gets probation for slap

VENTURA - The wife of singer Frankie Valli was sentenced Thursday to community service and probation for slapping a Moorpark restaurant owner but was spared the jail time that prosecutors sought.

Valli (Tamil வள்ளி) is the name of prominent Hindu god Murugan's consort, according to Tamil traditions. She is depicted as a the daughter of a tribal chief.
 was ordered to perform 40 hours of community service, although prosecutors asked for a sentence of two days behind bars or five days in a jail work-release program.

Valli was convicted of misdemeanor battery for slapping the co-owner of the Secret Garden restaurant in October while dining with her celebrity husband and '60s singer Frankie Avalon and his wife, Kay.

She also was sentenced to one year of unsupervised probation. She did not appear in court for the sentencing, although Frankie Valli, whose hits include ``Walk Like a Man'' and ``Big Girls Don't Cry,'' was there.

Witnesses testified that the celebrity diners raised a ruckus over menu prices. When restaurant co-owner Alex Sofsky grabbed Randy Valli's chair, he said she stood up and slapped him.

She maintains her innocence, her attorney said.

 pleaded innocent on Thursday to filing a false police report that claimed she was robbed at gunpoint, a prosecutor said.

Elvia Torres, 53, did not appear in Municipal Court but entered a plea through her lawyer, prosecutor Norman Wegener said. Her trial date will be set on Sept. 16.

Torres, who has not been arrested, could face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine if convicted of the misdemeanor count of making a false crime report.
