Pilot uses Catalina road for landing

SANTA CATALINA ISLAND San·ta Cat·a·li·na Island   or Catalina Island

An island off southern California in the southern Santa Barbara Islands. Discovered in 1542, it has been a noted resort center since the 1920s.
 - The pilot of a private plane that took off from the airport on Santa Catalina Island on Sunday reported engine problems and safely landed on a dirt road elsewhere on the island about an hour later.

The 30-year-old pilot from Redondo Beach landed the single-engine Cessna 150 about 1:35 p.m. on a road between the Isthmus isthmus (ĭs`məs), narrow neck of land connecting two larger land areas. Since it commands the only land route between two large areas and is on two seas, an isthmus has great strategical and commercial importance and is a favorable situation  and Catalina Harbor, on the west end of the island, said county lifeguard Lt. Mike Cunningham.
