BRIEFLY : POLICE CHASE LANDS WOMAN IN CUSTODY.


A woman led police on a 35-mile chase Saturday before the car ran out of gas and she was arrested in Sylmar, police said.

Ramirez, a Sun Valley resident, was booked at the LAPD's Van Nuys station on suspicion of felony evading, officials said.

A friend of Ramirez's had made the auto theft report but later said the vehicle had not been stolen, police said.

Car hits, kills man standing on freeway

California Highway Patrol officials said Flores was driving east on the freeway at about 11:35 p.m. Friday when his car inexplicably ran off the road near Kuehner Drive.

When Flores got out to look at the damage, he was hit by another car, officials said. The driver of the other vehicle, who was not identified, was not injured.

Block party for fire crews' effort slated

Porter Ranch residents are throwing a block party today to thank firefighters for knocking down a 470-acre, wind-driven wildfire earlier this month before it damaged any homes.

The party will be from noon to 4:30 p.m. at Winnetka Avenue and Rinaldi Street in Northridge.

Food and entertainment, including strolling musicians and games for children, will be offered. Vintage fire equipment will be on display.

Teen on train tracks hit twice, loses ear

A teen-ager's ear was severed Saturday when he was hit twice by a train while he was running across the tracks, a city fire spokesman said.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority's Blue Line train was approaching a station along East Washington Boulevard The following roads are named Washington Boulevard:

 south of downtown about 1:10 p.m. when the boy ran across the tracks, spokesman Brian Humphrey said.

The train was already slowing to a stop but struck the boy, throwing him up to 50 feet, Humphrey said.

The boy landed on the tracks and the train struck him again, dragging him a short distance, he said.

``He was found in front of the train,'' Humphrey said. ``A few more inches, he would have met his demise.''

The boy, whose name wasn't released, was taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center (also known as County USC) is an 800-bed teaching hospital located in East Los Angeles in the Boyle Heights neighborhood of Los Angeles, California.  in serious condition, he said.

Paramedics crawled under the train as they searched the area around the tracks for the boy's ear, but didn't find it, Humphrey said.
