ENCINO - Police were called out over complaints about a party Sunday at singer Al Jarreau's home, officials said Monday.

Officers said they were called out at 2:30 p.m. by neighbors of the 59-year-old pop and jazz singer, who lives on Morrison Avenue in Encino.

A neighbor reported that some of the partygoers uprooted plants in his flower bed, said Detective Nick Angelo of the LAPD's West Valley Division, but could not positively identify who did it. A vandalism report was turned in, with no arrests, Angelo said.

Weapons suspect pleads no contest

A Granada Hills man accused of threatening a Los Angeles police officer with a shotgun pleaded no contest Monday to a lesser charge of brandishing a firearm, officials said.

Steven Michael Short, 23, was sentenced to the 12 days he already served in county jail after his Feb. 8 arrest, Deputy District Attorney John Nantroup said.

Gunman sentenced for gang murders

A member of the Asian Boyz gang was sentenced to consecutive life prison terms without parole for his part in the murders of seven people during a 1995 crime spree.

Roatha Buth, 26, was sentenced Monday by Los Angeles County Superior Court Judge Darlene Schempp in Van Nuys. He was sentenced to five consecutive life terms without parole for five of the murders, two more life sentences for two attempted murders and an additional 28 years for using a gun in the crimes.

Fuel blowup burns truck, car, trailers
