A Woodland Hills man whose construction company was under contract to the Los Angeles Unified School District The Los Angeles Unified School District (the "LAUSD") is the largest (in terms of number of students) public school system in California and the second-largest in the United States. Only the New York City Department of Education has a larger student population.  was arrested Friday on a warrant alleging that he tried to bribe an inspector with money hidden in a cookie box, district attorney's officials said.

Kambiz ``Ken'' Maleki of Woodland Hills is suspected of slipping the inspector five $100 bills hidden between layers of cookies, after the inspector ordered him to correct substandard work at Coliseum Street Elementary School.

The defendant, who owns K&M Construction of Woodland Hills, was under contract to perform a safety and technology upgrade at the school.

Deputy District Attorney Alexander Karkanen said Maleki, 43, and the inspector disagreed over whether workmanship and materials used in the upgrade were substandard.

The alleged bribe was offered March 18, after the inspector halted work on the project until the school district's construction standards were met. The inspector notified his supervisors and authorities, who launched a sting operation. Maleki was arrested by investigators with the District Attorney's Office.
