BRIEFLY : PARENTS REMINDED TO IMMUNIZE KIDS.


County health officials are reminding parents they must get their children immunized before school starts.

The law requires all children entering school for the first time to be fully immunized against diphtheria diphtheria (dĭfthēr`ēə), acute contagious disease caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae (Klebs-Loffler bacillus) bacteria that have been infected by a bacteriophage. Police at autopsy of shooting victim

NORTH HOLLYWOOD - Homicide detectives attended the autopsy of Jaime Garcia on Monday in an effort to develop leads in the slaying of the 20-year-old on the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Originally built as U.S. Highway 99, it was re-signed as Interstate 5 in 1964. , police said.

The Arleta resident was shot about 11 p.m. Friday while riding with three friends on the southbound Golden State Freeway near Sunland Boulevard, said Detective Mike Coffey of the North Hollywood Division.

Garcia was sitting in the right rear seat of a 1990 Oldsmobile when he was hit by one of three bullets fired from another car, Coffey said.

No felony charges against diplomat

VAN NUYS - Prosecutors decided Monday not to file felony spousal abuse charges against a South African deputy consul who allegedly injured his wife last week and then claimed immunity from prosecution, officials said.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office reviewed the case against Mpendulo Kumalo and decided that scratches inflicted on his wife did not warrant a felony charge, said D.A. spokeswoman Sandi Gibbons.

As a result, the case was forwarded to the Van Nuys office of the Los Angeles City Attorney's Office for consideration of misdemeanor charges, she said.

According to police, Kumalo got into a physical fight with his wife at their North Hollywood home on Aug. 20.

Suspect's son saw history of abuse

Plaintiffs can't get punitive damages Monetary compensation awarded to an injured party that goes beyond that which is necessary to compensate the individual for losses and that is intended to punish the wrongdoer.  

Plaintiffs suing the Metropolitan Transportation Authority to get better service for disabled riders will not be entitled to punitive damages if they win their case, a federal judge ruled Monday.

But U.S. District Judge Consuelo B. Marshall did grant the plaintiffs class-action status. She also refused the MTA's request to drop claims based on the Americans With Disabilities Act Americans with Disabilities Act, U.S. civil-rights law, enacted 1990, that forbids discrimination of various sorts against persons with physical or mental handicaps. .

New law speeds up adoption process

Gov. Pete Wilson signed into law Monday a Van Nuys lawmaker's bill to speed up the adoption process for youngsters in foster care.

The bill, authored by Sen. Herschel Rosenthal, D-Van Nuys, directs courts to review foster-care cases every six months. The court's evaluation will be based on county welfare department reports on the child's physical, mental, emotional and educational status.

Identities released of 2 crash victims

AGUA DULCE - Officials Monday identified two victims killed late Saturday night in an Agua Dulce crash.

Jodi Roos, 41, of Canyon Country, and Thomas Gibson, 39, of Lancaster died in the collision on Sierra Highway at 11:40 p.m., officials said.

California Highway Patrol officers said Roos' vehicle crossed a double-yellow line for unknown reasons and rammed head-on into Gibson's Jeep.

Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
