In a trial with a great deal of notoriety, a court order directed to attorneys and witnesses not to discuss the case with the media—such

News organizations Friday challenged a blanket gag order imposed by the judge in the O.J. Simpson civil trial, calling the order an assault on First Amendment rights.

``There is no justification for any gag order in this case, much less the blanket gag order imposed by the court,'' attorney Kelli Sager wrote in court papers.

In the motion filed in Superior Court in Santa Monica, 10 news organizations contended the gag order infringes upon ``the public's important constitutional interest in a free flow of information.''

Superior Court Judge Hiroshi Fujisaki took the unusual step Tuesday of barring public comments by any trial participants about ``anything connected with this trial.'' Civil libertarians said they had never seen such a sweeping gag order in a civil case.

Motorcycle law challenge upheld

A federal appeals court upheld a challenge to California's motorcycle helmet law in a ruling issued Friday.

In a 3-0 vote, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals held that officers can pull over bikers if they think riders' helmets are too small, but can't issue tickets unless cyclists know the helmets are illegal.

The case arose out of claims by a loose coalition of bikers from San Diego, Orange, Los Angeles and Ventura counties who claimed the California Highway Patrol was selectively enforcing the helmet law.

State law requires motorcyclists to wear helmets that comply with federal safety standards. Manufactures attach ``DOT'' stickers showing they have been approved.
