``Sandy was a tough gorilla,'' Chatfield said. ``She was wild (when she was) caught in Africa in 1962, and came to the Los Angeles Zoo in 1976 from the Albuquerque Zoo. She weathered most changes in her life well - and she was an excellent mother.''

Sandy had three offspring, Cleopatra, Angel and Cassius. Angel, 10, and Cleopatra, 20, continue to live at the zoo. The zoo has eight other lowland gorillas.
