BRIEFLY : OUTLAW ALCOHOLISM TREATMENT PUNISHED.


A man charged in the death of a patient at an unlicensed alcohol detoxification clinic in North Hollywood was sentenced Friday to three years probation and the eight days he has already served in jail.

Jose Robert Rodriguez, 46, pleaded no contest last month to involuntary manslaughter The act of unlawfully killing another human being unintentionally.

Most unintentional killings are not murder but involuntary manslaughter. The absence of the element of intent is the key distinguishing factor between voluntary and involuntary manslaughter.

Judge Michael Harwin also ordered Rodriguez to pay $200 in restitution and prohibited him from consuming alcohol.

Co-defendant Dante Barrera, 33, who also pleaded no contest to one count of involuntary manslaughter, is scheduled to be sentenced in the Van Nuys courtroom Tuesday.

Ramming squad car ends speed chase

A high-speed police chase over streets packed with Friday afternoon commuters ended when officers rammed the car and arrested the driver and his passenger.
