Thomas K. Welch, head of the Salt Lake Olympic Organizing Committee and the man who brought the 2002 Winter Games to Utah, was charged Monday with misdemeanor battery on his wife.

Welch, 53, the SLOC's president and chief executive officer, was accused of scuffling with his wife, Alma, in the garage of their opulent home on July 9 after he admitted to an extramarital ex·tra·mar·i·tal

Alma Welch, 47, suffered bruises when her husband tried to stop her from getting into his car to look at gifts, pictures and letters involving his lover, according to a police report.

The charge of domestic violence battery was filed against the wishes of Alma Welch and other family members, according to Salt Lake City Deputy City Attorney Virginia Ward.

Welch was in Africa on a safari with his son Monday and unavailable to comment.

 defensive tackle Reuben Davis underwent successful surgery to repair his torn right Achilles' tendon and could miss the entire 1997 season.

Team doctors said the procedure went as expected, however they wouldn't project a possible return date.

Davis suffered the injury during Saturday's practice.

The Chargers also waived wide receivers Steve Daniels and Jimmy Oliver and re-signed wideout Damion Johnson.
