Suspect in slaying found as jail inmate

PACOIMA - Homicide detectives have arrested a man accused of fatally shooting another man after a dispute in a Pacoima bar 16 years ago, police said Thursday.

Javier Hernandez Avila was found late Wednesday in a Castaic jail using a different name and birth date, said Sgt. Mark Aragon of the Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  Police Department's Foothill Division.

Men given jail time in tire shop thefts

 men were sentenced to jail terms Thursday for repeatedly robbing a Vineland Avenue tire store and threatening to kill the manager if he called police, authorities said.

Cruz Acosta of Arleta and Kevin Franklin of Sun Valley both pleaded no contest late Wednesday to theft with a prior conviction and admitted violating probation, said Mike Qualls of the City Attorney's Office.

Van Nuys Municipal Judge Karen Nudell sentenced Acosta, 42, to six months in jail. He was on probation for three prior theft convictions.

Nudell sentenced Franklin, 30, to four months in jail. He was on probation for two prior theft convictions in 1997 and 1998.

The judge also placed the pair on two years' probation.

The current contract expires in January. This contract would take effect Feb. 1.

Holden to receive colleague backing

Countering endorsements given by several of his colleagues to his opponent, Councilman Nate Holden Nathaniel "Nate" R. Holden (1929-) served on the Los Angeles City Council from 1987 to 2002. He previously served a term on the California State Senate and was Assistant Chief Deputy to then Los Angeles County Supervisor Kenneth Hahn.  is expected to announce today that he is receiving the backing of four City Council members in his June 8 runoff election.

Challenger Madison Shockley has been endorsed by council members Mark Ridley-Thomas, Rita Walters, Mike Feuer and Jackie Goldberg.

Holden was forced into the runoff after coming up fewer than 100 votes short of a majority.

Clinton to visit L.A. for benefit dinner

President Clinton will be in Los Angeles on Saturday as part of a four-day, five-stop fund-raising tour through Washington, California and Nevada.

Clinton will travel from Palo Alto to Los Angeles, where he is scheduled to attend a ``Majority 2000'' dinner Saturday afternoon at Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills, according to the White House press office.

He will leave the next day for a fund-raiser in San Diego.
