BRIEFLY : NOVOTNA GETS HINGIS UNHINGED.

Swiss teen-ager Martina Hingis Martina Hingis (pronounced: hɪŋˈɡɪs) (born September 30, 1980 in Košice, Slovakia) is a former World No. 1 Swiss tennis player. , her confidence and control suddenly nowhere to be found, was beaten 6-2, 6-2 Sunday by Jana Novotna in the European Indoors final in Zurich, Switzerland.

``I was a bit sad not to win here,'' said Hingis, who shed a few tears during the awards ceremony. ``But at least I know there are things I can improve on for next season.''

The 16-year-old had won her previous nine matches. This was Hingis' third appearance at the European Indoors, the tournament in which she made her professional debut two years ago.

``Jana played well all week and today she was really strong,'' Hingis said. ``I was having trouble with my serve. I don't think I'm as mentally fit as I was earlier. I might be tired from all the tournaments I've been in.''

Novotna, the No. 4 seed from the Czech Republic, showed little effects of a bad cold, winning in just more than an hour to capture the $150,000 first prize from the $926,000 purse. This was her second title of the year and the 12th of her career.
