BRIEFLY : NEW TRIAL UNLIKELY IN '95 LANDSLIDE SUIT.

VENTURA - Three months after losing their $24 million suit against a nearby ranch, victims of the 1995 La Conchita landslide landslide, rapid slipping of a mass of earth or rock from a higher elevation to a lower level under the influence of gravity and water lubrication. More specifically, rockslides are the rapid downhill movement of large masses of rock with little or no hydraulic flow,  were back in court Monday to ask a judge for a new trial.

Property owners whose homes were damaged by the landslide asked Superior Court Judge Henry Walsh to take another look at evidence in the civil suit, which ended in January after Walsh ruled La Conchita Ranch Co. was not to blame for the March 4, 1995 disaster.

``I think the interest of justice in this case needs to be squared against the court's decision in this matter,'' said Tim Cohalen, an attorney representing La Conchita property owners. Cohalen said expert witnesses confused the judge during the seven-week trial and urged him to revisit re·vis·it

``The trial was the time and the place to produce evidence,'' said Walsh, who was the subject of protests outside a recent ceremony to honor Ventura County jurists The following lists are of prominent jurists, including judges, listed in alphabetical order by jurisdiction. . ``I don't see where it is useful at this point to reopen the case for additional testimony.''

Those residents claim the ranch above the tiny seaside community excessively irrigated crops, causing the slide.

Although Walsh did not immediately release a written ruling, he said he was not inclined to grant the request.
