BRIEFLY : NEW CAR-POOL LANES TO OPEN ON FREEWAY.

Car-poolers can expect to shave some minutes off their drive time thanks to a 12-mile stretch of new car-pool lanes that will open today on the Ronald Reagan Freeway.

The new high-occupancy vehicle lanes, which run from the Ventura County line to the Golden State Freeway The Golden State Freeway is a north-south freeway running through Kern County and Los Angeles County, California. Originally built as U.S. Highway 99, it was re-signed as Interstate 5 in 1964. , should save on average one minute per mile - or 12 minutes - during peak traffic hours, said Caltrans spokeswoman Patricia Reid.

The car-pool lanes and a new 167-space park-and-ride lot on Winnetka Avenue are the result of a $23 million project started in August 1994, funded by a combination of federal, state and local sales taxes.

That project also included widening of the eastbound and westbound regular lanes on the Ronald Reagan Freeway from three to four lanes, adding a 120-space parking lot at the corner of Chatsworth Street and Sepulveda Boulevard in Mission Hills and the constructing of seven sound walls along the freeway.
