Burbank resident and John Burroughs High School John Burroughs High School is a public high school located in Burbank, California. Emilio Urioste, Jr. is the current principal. The school was built in the 1920's, but wasn't established as a high school until 1948. The school was named after naturalist John Burroughs.  senior Jairo Ramirez placed second in the center's Spotlight Awards Photography Contest. He received a $1,000 cash award. Kalen Hayman, also a senior at John Burroughs High School, received an honorable mention from the contest.

Ramirez's winning photo depicted a ballerina in three images, positioned in perspective from near to distant before a backdrop of purple ocean Purple Ocean was a bulletin board system founded in June of 1984 by SysOp Dustin Malcom of Plano, Texas. The Purple Ocean BBS was best known for its numerous gaming features including numerous different versions and scenarios of Trade Wars 1000, 2000, and 2002.  and pink sky. Ramirez emphasized the ballerina's movement through blurred effects around her.

In its first year, the Spotlight Awards Photography Competition highlights the talents of young photographers, grades nine through 12. Professional photographers, curators and collectors evaluate the works and select the winners.

The ``Speak Up'' support group is guided by a speech therapist and meets every Thursday from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in the Rehabilitation Institute at the medical center, 1509 Wilson Terrace in Glendale.

The cost of the class is $20 per month. The next ``Speak Up'' classes are scheduled March 18 and 25.

Series of seminars on property taxes

GLENDALE - The county of Los Angeles is sponsoring a series of free seminars to assist property owners who feel their taxes should be lowered due to a decline in their property value.

The Board of Supervisors felt the seminars were needed because more than 75,000 assessment appeals applications were received in the 1997-98 fiscal year and more than 24,000 during the 1998-99 filing period.

The seminar is scheduled for 10 a.m. on April 6, May 4 and June 1 at the Glendale Public Library The Glendale Public Library is located in Glendale, California, and serves a diverse community of over 200,000 people. GPL has a total of 6 branches (a 7th branch is slated to open in 2007) in addition to the large Central Library, including the unique Brand Library and Art Center. , 222 E. Harvard St.

The seminars are expected to last 75 minutes, and the library will validate for three-hour parking.

The classes will cover assessment appeals rights, how to prepare for a hearing, what qualifies as admissible and inadmissible evidence, what will happen at a hearing and what to expect after the hearing.
