Erik Morales stopped Reynante Jamili at the end of the sixth round Saturday night in Tijuana, Mexico, to retain the WBC super bantamweight championship.

Morales, a hometown favorite, connected with a hard right that knocked down Jamili at the end of the sixth round. Referee Marty Denkin called it.

Morales (34-0) turned back the top contender in Jamili (39-5), who is from the Philippines.

``I was trying to hit him with the right from early on, but I was a bit short with it. Finally, I got him,'' Morales said. ``He hit me with a couple of rights, but he never hurt me.''

Morales weighed 122 pounds, Jamili 121-1/2.

In another bout, Michael Carbajal, trailing on all three judges' cards, stopped Jorge Arce in the 11th round to claim the junior flyweight championship of the fringe WBO.

Carbajal (49-4) landed a left that sent Arce back into the ropes, then hit Arce with three strong rights to send him into the ropes a second time. The fight was called at 1:53 of the round.

A top heavyweight boxing contender accused of raping a woman in his hotel room had to be removed from a Las Vegas courtroom following an outburst.

Ike Ibeabuchi, 26, known as ``The President'' in the ring, was scheduled to be arraigned Friday but was removed from court after he became upset that the prosecution wanted bail set at $5 million.

Ibeabuchi is to return to court for arraignment on Aug. 6. He will continue to be held without bail in the Clark County Detention Center pending the court appearance.

Ibeabuchi, undefeated at 20-0 with 15 knockouts and ranked No. 2 by the IBF, is charged with sexual assault, attempted sexual assault, kidnapping and battery with intent to commit sexual assault.

HORSE RACING: Yagli, the 1-10 favorite, cruised to a 1-1/2-length victory in the $250,000 United Nations Handicap at Monmouth Park in Oceanport, N.J.

Irish-bred Sweet Ludy and jockey Corey Nakatani won the $150,000 San Clemente Handicap before 18,059 fans at Del Mar.

NHL: Restricted free agent left wing Vladimir Tsyplakov, whose disappointing performance last season symbolized the frustrations of the Kings, signed a one-year contract with the team worth about $600,000.

OUTDOORS: Davy Hite of Prosperity, S.C., weighed in his second consecutive 19-plus-pound, five-fish limit in front of some 28,000 fishing fanatics at the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans to take the $100,000 champion's pot at the 29th BASS Masters Classic.

``This is the greatest thing that a tournament fisherman could even hope to accomplish,'' he said after beating the field by 10-pound margin with a three-day total of 55 pounds, 10 ounces.

Castaic contender Aaron Martens caught a limit of 14 pounds, 1 ounce, equaling his previous two-day total, for a 28-pound, 2-ounce total and 24th place out of 45 qualifiers.

The four-angler California contingent was led by Mark Rizk of Redding, who finished seventh.
