BRIEFLY : MONTGOMERIE TAKES GIANT PURSE.


Colin Montgomerie Colin Stuart Montgomerie, OBE (born June 23, 1963) is a Scottish professional golfer often referred to by his nickname 'Monty'. He has had one of the finest careers in European Tour history, having won a record eight Order of Merit titles including a streak of seven consecutively  birdied the third playoff hole Sunday to beat Ernie Els Theodore Ernest "Ernie" Els (born October 17, 1969) is a South African golfer who has been one of the top professional players in the world since the mid-1990s. A former World No. 1, he is known as "The Big Easy", for his imposing physical stature (he stands 1.  and win the Million Dollar Challenge in Sun City, South Africa, earning $1 million in golf's richest first prize.

``It will make for a good Christmas,'' said Montgomerie, loser of five previous playoffs, including two in major tournaments. ``OK, it's not a major. I feel coming here and seeing the 12 names here, I feel very proud I've beaten them.''

Montgomerie won the tournament with a 7-foot birdie putt. The victory capped a strong season for the Scotsman, who has captured the European PGA Tour earnings title for four straight years.

Els, of South Africa, earned $250,000.

Montgomerie and Els finished the tournament at 14-under-par and took part in only the second playoff in the 16-year history of the event at this resort in northern South Africa.

Peter Senior overcame driving wind and rain to shoot a 2-under-par 70 and win the $560,000 Greg Norman Holden Classic in Melbourne, Australia, beating the tournament host by one shot.
