Heated emotions and a lack of cold cash doomed Howard Milstein's bid for the Washington Redskins. Now the search is on - again - for a new owner of the NFL team.

Milstein, saying he wanted to get out before the process got ``protracted'' and ``contentious'' when it already was both, withdrew his group's $800 million bid to buy the Redskins on Wednesday when it became clear he lacked the necessary support from NFL owners.

Milstein's bid, which would have set a record for a U.S. sports franchise, was dogged from the start over questions about his finances and concerns that he would be a litigious, maverick owner. Although worth an estimated $500 million, Milstein has his fortune tied up in real estate and did not have enough ready cash on hand to satisfy many of the owners.

The Green Bay Packers signed free-agent running back Brent Moss, who has been out of football since being waived by the St. Louis Rams in 1996. Moss, 27, was the star of the 1994 Rose Bowl for Wisconsin in a 21-16 win over UCLA.

HORSE RACING: Julie Krone, thoroughbred racing's most successful female jockey, is expected to announce her retirement today in New York. Krone, 35, has won more than 3,500 races and is the only female rider to win a Triple Crown race - the 1993 Belmont Stakes aboard Colonial Affair. She is expected to honor her riding commitments through April 18.

TENNIS: Top-seeded Carlos Moya, trying to regain the world's No. 1 ranking, survived a scare in his first match at the Gold Flake Open with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Vladimir Voltchkov of Belarus in Madras, India. Moya can again overtake Pete Sampras in the rankings by reaching the final in this tournament.

BASKETBALL: Point guard Khalid El-Amin is passing up a shot at the NBA draft and will return for his junior year at Connecticut.
