Firefighters took less than five minutes to put it out, Humphrey said. No one was injured in the fire.

Man, 81, found dead in apartment pool

STUDIO CITY - An 81-year-old man was found dead at the bottom of a pool at an apartment complex Thursday afternoon, officials said.

The man, who was not immediately identified, had recently undergone knee surgery and walked with a cane, said Brian Humphrey, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Fire Department.

``He may have fallen into the water,'' Humphrey said.

The man's wife, who had been shopping for two hours, returned about 1 p.m. to the apartment in the 12800 block of Moorpark Street and found her husband in the pool, officials said.

Councilman Alex Padilla has introduced two proposals aimed at boosting firefighting services in the San Fernando Valley San Fernando Valley

The Sierra Club filed court papers Thursday challenging the California Coastal Commission's decision to approve a change in Pepperdine University's plan for long-range development at its Malibu campus.

The environmental group contends that further grading for a new upper campus area would be done in ``an area of intense geologic instability.''

The project also would ``completely destroy a rare needlegrass habitat,'' the group contends.

Pepperdine officials could not be reached for comment.
