Hahn fires back in battle of TV ads

City Attorney James Hahn For the Iowa politician, see .

James Kenneth "Jim" Hahn (born July 3, 1950) is an American politician from the Democratic Party. He was the Deputy City Attorney (1975-1979), City Controller (1981-1985), City Attorney (1985-2001) and Mayor of Los Angeles, California
struck back Friday with his own commercial against election challenger Ted Stein, pointing to back property taxes owed by a partnership in which Stein was involved.

The spot seeks to counter a Stein commercial that began earlier this week critical of Hahn's record as city attorney and touting Stein's endorsement by Mayor Richard Riordan Richard J. Riordan (born May 1, 1930) is a Republican politician from California, U.S. who served as the California Secretary of Education from 2003–2005 and as Mayor of Los Angeles from 1993–2001. Riordan ran for Governor of California unsuccessfully in 2002.  and the Los Angeles Police Protective League.

Hahn's ad shows a newspaper article citing the back taxes owed and accuses Stein of stiffing Los Angeles. ``He still owes us, but he's put $200,000 into his own campaign.''

In addition, Hahn stresses his independence from Riordan and the league with a text saying Stein is ``not qualified, not independent.''

Stein campaign manager Harvey Englander claimed Hahn's commercial is misleading because Stein paid his portion of taxes on the property, a South Central apartment building.

``It is the partnership that owes back taxes, and they are on a payment schedule - that is available to anyone - to do so,'' Englander said.

Glendale's mayor angry at Burbank

Glendale Mayor Sheldon Baker angrily has accused the Burbank City Council of trying to influence another city's elections by mailing out 36,000 letters to Glendale voters in an attempt to win support in the battle over airport expansion.

``The timing is very suspect since Burbank's actions occurred less than two weeks before Glendale's April 1 election, which involves a majority of council seats,'' Baker said Friday. Baker is running for his second term.

Burbank Councilman Ted McConkey denied that his city's officials were trying to influence the Glendale election.

``It has absolutely nothing to do with the election,'' McConkey said. ``We want the people of Glendale to know our position.''

The deadlock over airport expansion has been an issue in the Glendale election, with some candidates supporting the replacement of the city's three appointed airport commissioners.
