Inmate dies after fight with deputies

An inmate died in custody after a fight with Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies, authorities said Thursday.

The cause of Mark Philyaw's death Wednesday will be determined after an autopsy.

``Philyaw lost consciousness while being restrained,'' said Deputy Henry Garza, a department spokesman.

Philyaw, 33, was at the new Twin Towers Correctional Facility downtown when he died, said sheriff's Sgt. Susan Cross. Philyaw, who weighed about 250 pounds, had returned from a court appearance Wednesday when the fight began.

Philyaw had been arrested Nov. 20 by Los Angeles police on suspicion of assault on a peace officer.
