BRIEFLY : MAN HELD IN DEATH OF RAPPER'S ASSISTANT.


WOODLAND HILLS - A man was arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting a personal assistant to rap artist DJ Quik, police said Wednesday.

Quik's assistant, Darryl Reed, 36, was shot twice in the torso Tuesday night. Quik, born David Blake David Blake is a name shared by:
  • David Valentine Jardine Blake (1887-?), notable Australian military figure.
  • Dave Blake (1925- ) a politician from Manitoba, Canada.
  • David Blake (1971- ), host of an Internet radio stream about computer security
, and other witnesses had heard shots fired and saw Thaddeus Davis, 22, holding a gun, said Los Angeles Los Angeles (lôs ăn`jələs, lŏs, ăn`jəlēz'), city (1990 pop. 3,485,398), seat of Los Angeles co., S Calif.; inc. 1850.  police Officer Jason Lee.

The suspect fled on foot from Quik's home in the 22900 block of Sylvan sylvan

 Street and officers captured him a few blocks away after a short foot pursuit, Lee said. The weapon was recovered at the rapper's home.

Davis was arrested Tuesday at 11:50 p.m. at Quik's Woodland Hills home and was being held in lieu of $1 million bail at the LAPD's West Valley Jail.

Hit-and-run suspect enters not-guilty plea

A woman accused in the Dec. 19 hit-and-run death of a Taft High School student pleaded not guilty Wednesday to criminal charges stemming from the incident.

Maria DelSocorro Benitez, 39, was arraigned in Los Angeles Municipal Court, where she is due back Feb. 3 for a preliminary hearing.

The single mother of four is charged in the death of Taft sophomore Bobby Hobdy, 16. He was in a Watts crosswalk about 6:20 a.m., and on his way to catch a bus to the San Fernando Valley school, when he was hit.

Detective accused of intimidating trio

A veteran police detective has been charged with intimidating potential witnesses in the burglary and stalking trial of a friend, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Connie Howell, 40, was arrested and charged Tuesday, said Deputy District Attorney Daniel Feldstern. She was being held on $425,000 bail and was scheduled to be arraigned today in Los Angeles Municipal Court.

Ex-detective enters race for L.A. sheriff

Bill Baker, a retired head of the sheriff's detective division, announced Wednesday he will try to unseat longtime Sheriff Sherman Block.

Lee Baca, a Sheriff's Department chief who oversees six substations and a gang intervention program, also is expected to announce his candidacy today.

The candidates will compete in a June 2 election. If no one wins a majority, there will be a runoff in November.

Council OKs razing of McKinley Building

The City Council voted Wednesday to allow the 71-year-old McKinley Building to be demolished.

The facade of the Spanish revival building at Wilshire Boulevard and Oxford Street, across from the Wiltern Theater, was cracked during the 1994 Northridge Earthquake. And it was later damaged by rail construction.

Robert Larner, the building's owner, said vandals have ruined the inside. He wanted the building demolished. The council also heard objections from preservationists, who claimed the city was ignoring the area's history.
