Vela died at the scene. Police did not have a description of the gunman or the vehicle he was in. Homicide detectives at the Devonshire station were investigating the case and seeking witnesses.

Inmate escape bid exposed by noises

Sheriff's deputies Saturday foiled a pre-dawn escape attempt by two inmates in the hospital ward at the Men's Central Jail, a deputy said.

Holiday hit-and-run driver still at large

MISSION HILLS - Police on Saturday continued their search for a Thanksgiving hit-and-run-driver who injured four family members crossing a street.

On Saturday, one of the victims, 70-year-old Casta Ruiz, was upgraded to good condition from serious but stable, said a nursing supervisor at Providence Holy Cross Medical Center Providence Holy Cross Medical Center is a hospital in Mission Hills, California, USA. The hospital has 254 beds, and is part of Providence Health & Services. History  in Mission Hills.

Ruiz's daughter Maria Abaloni, 46, suffered life-threatening injuries, including head trauma and two broken legs. Abaloni's son Steven Trejos, 26, and her aunt Luvia Aragon, 63, also remained hospitalized Saturday.

Police are seeking the driver of a yellow, foreign-model sedan with front-end damage. The victims were hit in the 11800 block of Victory Boulevard in North Hollywood about 6 p.m. Thursday while walking to a relative's home for Thanksgiving dinner.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Los Angeles Police Department's Valley Traffic Division at (818) 756-8381.

Two L.A. areas lose electricity briefly

Nearly 2,000 Los Angeles homes and businesses lost power Saturday after equipment problems in the Westchester and Park La Brea areas, a Department of Water and Power spokeswoman said.

About 770 customers near McCool Avenue in Westchester lost power about 10 a.m. when a transformer fell to the ground, the DWP's Darlene Battle said. Service was restored by about 6:30 p.m.
