The couple's 6-year-old daughter slept through the standoff, which ended at 7:20 a.m., when a Special Weapons and Tactics team found Smith in an upstairs hallway at his home.

``He had no (apparent) injuries,'' said Lloyd, adding that an autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death. Investigators believe Smith may have overdosed on medication for a bad back.

Lloyd said he was depressed about family problems and worried about possible paralysis from an upcoming back surgery.

3rd teen arrested in desecration case

TUJUNGA - A third 14-year-old was arrested Tuesday in the recent case of vandalism at Verdugo Hills Cemetery, police said.

Feuer to develop regional councils

Councilman Mike Feuer is scheduling the first of a series of community meetings next week to develop a pilot program for what he is calling Livable liv·a·ble also live·a·ble

City to take grant to counter abuse

The council agreed to pay $165,000 of the grant to Haven Hills, Inc., a shelter for battered women, which will send counselors to the hospital to take over from police officers in helping battered women get treatment, shelter and help.

City Council orders study of job center

The Los Angeles City Council directed the Personnel Department on Tuesday to report on the resources needed to re-establish a city job information center in the San Fernando Valley.

Councilwoman Laura Chick said similar centers have been established in other parts of the city to help residents apply for city jobs and that the San Fernando Valley has a large enough population that it is deserving of a job center of its own.
