BRIEFLY : MAMIIT BATTLES INTO FINAL.Cecil Mamiit of USC An abbreviation for U.S. Code. won his semifinal match Saturday in Athens, Ga., and will try to become the first freshman to win the NCAA NCAA abbr. National Collegiate Athletic Association men's singles title since John McEnroe did so for Stanford in 1978. The fourth-seeded Mamiit, who grew up in Eagle Rock, topped Johan Hede of Mississippi 6-4, 6-1 and will face Fresno State's Fredrik Bergh today for the championship. Bergh is from Stockholm, Sweden. Mamiit, the only seeded player to reach the semifinals, was taken to three sets by Stanford's Paul Goldstein in the second round and lost only 18 total games in his other four matches. Bergh beat USC's Adam Peterson 6-4, 6-3. In doubles, Ashley Fisher and Jason Weir-Smith of Texas Christian defeated Chris Mahony and Pablo Montana of Tennessee 6-4, 6-2.
