Rick Majerus, who spurned an offer from Arizona State after leading Utah to the NCAA title game, will meet with Texas officials to discuss their basketball coaching vacancy, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

A panel met Saturday to begin the search for Tom Penders' replacement. Penders resigned last week after three weeks of controversy that began when unhappy players met with athletic director DeLoss Dodds.

Other top candidates on Texas' list reportedly include Bob Bender of Washington, Kelvin Sampson of Oklahoma, North Carolina assistant Phil Ford and Rick Barnes of Clemson.

GYMNASTICS: Amy Chow got a perfect score on the floor exercise, the final event of the Women's Professional Gymnastics Championship, to steal victory from 1996 Olympic gold medalist Shannon Miller at Lowell, Mass.

Miller's perfect 10 on the floor exercise put the pressure on Chow, who needed her own perfect mark in order to claim the title. Chow came through with a flawless performance to close out the event.

The two-day event featured eight women, including five from the 1996 Olympic gold medalist squad - Miller, Chow, Dominique Moceanu, Amanda Borden and Dominique Dawes.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: Dan Kendra, Florida State's starting quarterback, might be lost for the 1998 season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee in a scrimmage.

The 6-foot, 240-pound Kendra was poised to take over the starting slot after throwing for 1,006 yards and 12 touchdowns as Thad Busby's backup the past two years.

NFL: The St. Louis Rams acquired backup quarterback Steve Bono from the Green Bay Packers for a late-round draft pick in 1999. Coach Dick Vermeil said Bono would compete with Will Furrer, who was third-string last year, for the backup job behind Tony Banks.

SOCCER: Garth Lagerwey had three saves in the shootout as the Dallas Burn handed the San Jose Clash its third straight shootout loss with a 3-2 victory in Palo Alto. San Jose forward Eric Wynalda, the U.S. national team's all-time leading scorer from Westlake Village, collided with Lagerway during an attempt in the second round of the shootout. Wynalda strained a ligament just below his left knee and should be sidelined for three to four weeks.

NBA: Chicago Bulls forward Toni Kukoc will miss at least five games with a recurring foot injury.
